General Surgery Residency Program
Our five-year General Surgery Residency program provides a broad clinical experience in all of the defined categories in general surgery. The program has 20 categorical and eight preliminary interns. Each year four Post Graduate Year I (PGYI) categorical residents enter the five year track to prepare for General Surgery Boards, and eight PGYI preliminary residents enter their internship year before going on to a variety of specialties.
Saint Joseph Hospital has one of the busiest general surgical programs in Denver with approximately 15,000 operative procedures performed annually. On completion of training, a chief resident will have performed as many as 1,200 major cases. More surgery is done at Saint Joseph Hospital than can be covered by all the residents, affording residents the unique opportunity for a broad experience in the major components of general surgery. All of the general surgery, vascular, bariatric, surgical oncology and breast surgeons on the medical staff are part of the residency faculty and work directly with residents in the ED, OR and clinics providing our residents with a broad spectrum of surgical experience.
We are a non-pyramidal program in compliance with the RRC for surgery. Most of our graduates enter private-practice general surgery in medium sized cities in the western United States. About 20 percent of our graduates pursue fellowship training.
